America has a fascinating obsession with playing violence. When so many are utterly isolated from the threat of real physical attacks, the gritty realism offered by photos of blood and punches allow safe Americans a way to giddily cloak themselves in the significance of pain. Absorbing the cache suffering has in the minds of those who have never really suffered, this theatre of hurt appeases our taste for savagery while maintaining an innocence of true cruelty. It’s why the above magazine covers are considered cool and similarly graphic, but actual, photos of war victims don’t receive the same spotlight. Instead, they’re censored for being ‘too violent’.
